About Me.
My name is Joey Perman, and I'm a genderqueer actor and performer based in Brooklyn, New York.
I grew up in a small town in Western Massachusetts. It was there that I fell in love with theater, in my first role as Baby Bear when I was ten years old in The Trials of Goldilocks.
In 2018, I began studying theatre at Hofstra University. I spent those four years working towards a BFA in Theatre Arts with a focus in Performance. In the spring of my sophomore year, we went online because of the coronavirus. Because of this, we worked on productions online, filmed, streamed, masked, etc. Through all of it I gained a resilience that I carry with me in everything I do.
In the fall of 2021, I changed my name to Joey and started using they/them pronouns exclusively. It was thrilling and terrifying and entirely necessary. At the time, I was in the midst of tech week for a production of Everybody by Branden Jacob Jenkins, in which I was playing a "Somebody." It was a time of shedding layers and learning to face myself with honesty and vulnerability. I am always striving to be open about my journey, even when I don't have all the answers.
As an artist, I gravitate toward movement work and physicality, whether in a comedy or a work of horror. After graduating in May, I performed in a sketch comedy show called Sketch of New York. And this past fall, I worked as a scare actor at Terror Haunted House in Times Square, which furthered my interest in horror and immersive experiences.
